Default Fix footnote and endnote references to arabic numbers everywhere?

I can't point to an event that triggered this, but of late, every time I insert a footnote or endnote, it has a lower-case Roman numeral reference, although at this moment, my current document has a mixture because I was able to force one of them to an Arabic number. I want to force MS Office to fix this globally.

I want this to happen always and forever, not have to fight with it and lose again and again. How can I force this?

I looked for online help but Word 2019 didn't come up with it. Suggestions please. This is ridiculous. Word didn't use the wrong alternative ever before.

I also don't understand why modifying the endnote reference does not include the symbols to be used. I can change the numbering separately but that only works for the note I'm on. Thanks.

I just tried using Note Options again to fix the number.I got superscript all right. THe entire document is now 8 pt type and superscript. That's what I get for applying this to the "whole "document" instead of hone singe note I am on.

I also don't know by default what size the reference number is supposed to be. Since I was resetting it, I thought that 10, the endnote text size, was too big and chose 8 instead. Maybe it should be 10 since the text is 10. Suggestions? Thanks.

Work with copies!

Your footnotes should be formatted using the Footnote Text style.
Your footnote numbers should be formatted using the Footnote Reference style.
Your endnotes should be formatted using the Endnote Text style.
Your endnote letter/numbers should be formatted using the Endnote Reference style.

You body text, etc should have a different style. It sounds like everything may be formatted using the normal style.
Importance of Styles in Word

Could you upload a couple of pages with the problem (and no confidential or proprietary information)?

Default Fix footnote and endnote style to use arabic numbers.

I am attaching a chopped up sample.
I've done all that, as I always have done, mostly doing footnotes without setting anything. Their style was right out of the box.

The paper needs to be in a CMOS 17/Turabian 9th ed. style: main text double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman (I hate that font but I didn't get a vote).
The endnotes should be
Internally single-spaced
Between notes, double-spaced.
Times New Roman 10 Pt.
Endnote Reference superscript 10 pt. Times new ROman indented paragraph style first line .5 inches indent.

I got the numbers and the superscript going okay but the indentation is not correct and I had to change from lower-case Roman numerals to Arabic numerals

I've been doing this in MS Word, and the derivative SBL style, for over 20 years. Suddenly, MS Word 2019 doesn't know how to do an endnote. I had a similar struggle with footnotes. Those aren't right either.

If I change the endnote reference to superscript, the entire document went into superscript. Making the note numbers 10 made the endnote text 10 pts. I don't know how this could go more wrong. Thanks.

I have no problem re-formatting the endnotes to your specs - see attached.

By default, footnotes are formatted with Arabic numerals and endnotes are formatted with lower-case Roman numerals.

Hint: to reformat an endnote/footnote Style, apply the desired format to one, copy the paragraph break from it into the document body, then right-click and choose Styles>'Update Endnote/Footnote to match selection'.

Paul, thanks for your help. I looked at your document and that's what I want. I tried to fix the endnote style myself. I didn't see a way to tell it to have a first-line indented paragraph. I also saw no way to change from Roman numerals to Arabic numerals. I'm sorry but would you explain the fix in a bit more detail? I'm not sure that I understand all the steps fully. Thamks.
