Unexplained indent
Hi everyone. Hopefully someone can help me with this. In an MS Word document that I am trying to edit (not created by me) there is an unexplained indent in one of the paragraphs. It appears to be "line" related. There are no spaces or tabs, nothing in the ruler at the top. In this particular document, the indent is on line 18. If I add a return between the paragraphs, the indent remains at line 18, but is now whatever was above it. It is so hard to explain, maybe a visual.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx If I add a return above the paragraph it would look like this. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx If I eliminated the space between paragraphs, the intent would then be on this first line of the example above. I am losing my mind. Somebody please help! |

I suspect that there is a blank shape in your header or footer at that location. It might be a textbox.
I make use of this in my Letterhead Textboxes and Styles Tutorial. How to attach a file in this forum. |

Hi Karen,
I've deleted your posts from two other threads. In one, about "Using numbered list style, how to indent text immediately following heading to match heading indent?" your note was: Quote:

Please check the link I provided and see if it helps. If not, consider posting a sample document. |

Charles Kenyon, I appreciate your help. I'm not sure how I posted on different threads, sorry. When I look at the example I tried to show, the space is at the end of the line, but in reality it is at the start of the line. I'm home now, so I don't have access to the document, but I'm not sure how it would be a header issue. As I recall, the only thing in the header is the page number. I will check on that on Monday. As I said, the indent appears on line 18 of the page. Thanks for helping and I will certainly check the header and footer on Monday. If all else fails, I will simply retype the entire 8 page letter. *sigh*

I know you don't see it. This is not something obvious or intuitive. If you think Word is an intuitive program, you are in for a shock.
Look at the tutorial I linked earlier. That tutorial shows how things in the header like textboxes, that are invisible, can change placement of text in the document, can even make it like one or two lines have different margins. While the purpose of the tutorial is to help people make letterheads, it serves this purpose well. Again, if that doesn't help, consider posting a sample with the problem. Here's how to fill a copy of your letter with dummy text. The rand "virus": or how to insert dummy text into a document by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP Thinking about it. Here: Each of the green circles with a number indicates the presence of a shape in the header or footer of the document, not in the body. Only one is visible.
Here is the sample document showing how the text flows around. Sample Document With Textboxes in Header moving text in body around.docx Dropbox - Sample Document With Textboxes in Header moving text in body around.docx - Simplify your life Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 04-25-2020 at 03:41 PM. |
