Default Number the table of contents, even though heading style has no numbering

I have a document where I created styles for a main heading and a sub headings. I need the TOC to number the TOC as below, the problem is that the document is not using numbering. I also need it the points a and b to aligned under the text of the previous point.

Example:

Section A: blah blah (Main Title)

Section A1-a: Care and Treatment (Sub Title)
Sub Sub Heading: Results of Testing

The TOC needs to look like this:

Section A: - doesn't need a number
i. Care and Treatment (Roman numeral)
ii. Testing

a. Results of Testing
b. conclusion
iii. Next steps

Attach numbering to your applicable TOC styles. Use the procedure shown here:
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly

TOC 1 is level 1 and has no number but is in the MultiLevel list
TOC 2 is level 2
TOC 3 is level 3
TOC 4 is level 4

Thanks for your reply.

I have done as the article said, but I can't get the Table of Contents to even be created now. Keeps saying "No Table of Contents entries found"

Any further suggestions.

The attachment shows the numbered headings, the table of contents needs to be:

Section A
i
A

in other words Section A1 will reflect as i
and Section A1-a will reflect as A

Thanks in advance.

You need to have your text in the body of the document formatted using the built-in heading styles or some other styles that are recognized by the TOC field.

It still is not going to work, though. At least I can't get it to work. Here is my attempt. Dropbox - Example of problem.docx - Simplify your life

The sample doc you provided doesn't have any styles in use other than TOC styles. Please supply a beefier sample doc where you have styles which play the role of headings and actually make it clear as to whether the headings have autonumbering or not.

If your headings have autonumbering on them, those will also appear in the TOC unless you do something clever with style separators.

You can apply an outline number list to TOC styles but you need to firstly stop those styles from automatically updating before going and fiddling with the outline lists for the TOC styles.

Thanks, I realized that I had assigned the wrong heading style to the list style.

I got the TOC to work but not numbered the way I needed it, I have admitted defeat and decided I have spent way to much time trying to fix this.

In my mind it made no sense to number the document that way anyway.

Thanks for your your help and suggestions everyone.
