Word Table of Contents - when I title a heading "table", table of contents shows "table2"
I'm trying to get the word "Table" to appear as just the word "Table" in an automatic table of contents.
If I change the word table to anything else e.g. "Total Table" then when refreshed the table of contents shows it as "Total Table" but if I just write "Table" then when refreshed the table of contents shows it as "table2". I have multiple instances of "Table" that I want to use and I just want them all named "Table" in the table of contents. Is this possible using an automatic table of contents? |

Can you post a sample document that shows this?
Why do you want a series of the word 'Table' in the TOC? Does that really help the reader navigate?

Are you doing a Table of Contents or a Table of Tables/Figures?

Hi both,
Thanks very much for your replies. I'm writing desk notes on how to update a monthly report and in each section the user will need to know how to update a table as well as how to update the commentary associated with the table. As each table already comes under a heading I thought it would look a bit unwieldy and be a bit onerous to also name each table with the heading. This is what I'd like the toc to say: BAU – Operational Financial Performance P&L Summary(excl. Fee for Service) Table Commentary Fee for Service - Operational Financial Performance Table Commentary BAU – Branch Operational Financial Performance Summary(excl. Fee for Service) Table Commentary This is what the toc is saying (it's updated from table2 to table 3 today lol): Last edited by jncuk; 04-15-2020 at 06:04 PM. |

I reckon you are looking at the page number sitting immediately after the TOC text entry because the word Table is too short a line and the 'Jason Tab' is coming in to play.
What happens if you select the TOC and press Ctrl-Space and Ctrl-Q?

Try clicking in one of the TOC entries for table. In the ruler, you will see a tab stop where the page number is. Delete that tab stop. (Click on it and drag it off the ruler.)
What happens? |

Solved :-)
Hi Andrew, Charles, thanks so much for your help.
I managed to work it out just by using "jason tab" as an extra google search term. Btw lol to the "jason" reference I found here Word: Getting rid of the ‘Jason tab’ in a TOC | CyberText Newsletter Using that link I played around a bit and found out that it was indeed a rogue tab at 3cm at toc level 3. So I did this to remove it and it worked a dream: On the toc, right-click and choose edit field. Select toc, select modify, select toc3, select modify, select format, select tabs, select 3cm, click clear, press "ok" four times, select "replace this table of contents", select ok. Much appreciated :-) |

OK, that tells me that the TOC style has the hanging indent and tab stop saved as part of the style.
If you look at the ruler when your cursor is in one of those paragraphs you will see settings similar to this picture. Note the tab stop after the hanging indent (at 2cm in my picture) which happens to align with where the page number is appearing on the really short line. The longer line gets past this point before the tab appears so that line is not impacted by that extra tab stop. Remove that extra tab stop from your TOC paragraph and save this to change to the style (you may have Automatically Update on your TOC styles so this 'might' be automatic). Once your style is fixed to exclude this extra tab stop, you can update the TOC and then select it and press Ctrl-Q to reset the paragraph formats to the (now corrected) style definition. Note that this is commonly called the Jason Tab because it will come back whenever you update the TOC (it won't stay dead). You can do a google search for this term to learn about it further.
