Default Help formatting my table of contents!

Hello,

Im having a few issues getting my table of contents formatted correctly, I have attached the document.

Could someone please explain how I can:

1. Format the table of contents so that all the pages before the main body of the document (e.g. the list of figures and tables) appear in the table of contents but without a number next to them, basically I want the first numbered heading to the the introduction and that to be heading 1. I also want to do this for appendices.

2. Increase the indentation size in my table of contents? Basically I cant seem to get the indentation size to be equal, in my document the is no indentation next to heading 4. and no indentation next to heading 4.1, but then heading 4.1.1 is indented, how can I make the heading number 4.1 indent? Also the gap between 4.1 and the heading name is different between 4.1.1 and the heading name, how can I make this gap equal?

I hope this makes sense! if not just ask me and I will try to clarify. I have attached a an example picture I found on google of the format I want my table of contents to look like.

regards,

Hello,
The appearance of Table of Contents entries are controlled by thhe TOC styles.
The formatting of each item at the same level must be the same. So if you use Heading 1 for your headings in your front matter, and Heading 1 in your document body, the formatting will be the same.
Consider using a lower-level heading for your front matter headings if you do not want page numbers. You can modify these styles so they appear the same as Heading 1. This is often done with Appendices.
Heading Numbering is best done tied to styles following the directions given in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

Thanks for your reply, I have managed to get the titles into the table of contents without them appearing with numbers.

However, I cant seem to control the indent of the both the numbers and the text for the numbered headings, do you know how this is controlled?

I have tried changing this under table of contents>custom table of contents>modify>modify and then changing the indent, however this moves the headings in the body of the text, I only want to move their position in the table of contents...
