Word relative link to excel - How can you explain this ?
Ok guys,
So I did alot of research on how to 'relative link' an excel file to a word doc. The thing is, I had been doing this for years. I had a excelfile and a worddoc who always kept being synced, no matter where I moved them to or whatever I renamed the path to. Today I tried making a new exceldoc that kept in sync with the word doc, but I cannot seem to make it work. The word doc keeps linking with the original pathway when I try moving or renaming the original structure. I have read alot about this and everyone keeps stating that it is not possible to keep them linked. Well, I can tell you 100% sure that it IS pssoble. As a way of proving this, I have screen recorded a test with my previous well-linked files. A little extra info : 1) I change a value in my original excel doc and you see it synced with the word doc 2) I copy/paste the folder to another drive and rename it 3) You see me changing a value in the new excel doc and then open up the word doc, which is updating to the correct values. 4) to prove even further I press ALT+F9 to show you that the linked information has in fact changed to the new folder structure. Can someone PLEASE tell me why this is no longer working when trying to replicate this linking in a new word and excel-doc ??? Link to the screen recording : Relative link ??? - YouTube |

Links from Word to Excel use LINK fields, as your video demonstrates. As clearly stated in the Word Fields and Relative Paths to External Files 'Sticky' thread at the top of this forum (https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...nal-files.html), however, all Word field paths are absolute; they have never been relative. As also explained in that thread, whilst field coding can be used to make other kinds of field employ relative paths, it is not possible to make LINK fields behave as if they had relative paths.

Have you taken a look at the video I posted ? You can clearly see that the path is dynamic, as it changes automatically when i move the folder around or rename it. How can this be explained then? I read the sticky btw but I still believe that the files I have behave in a way that cannot ben explained by this thread... |

What your document demonstrates is the use of the Hyperlink Base. See: How to create absolute hyperlinks and relative hyperlinks in Word documents - Microsoft Support . Although MS refers to these as relative links, they aren't relative in the true sense. Moreover, using the Hyperlink Base messes around with internal document links also.
PS: As there's no audio in the video - which is low resolution - and nothing in your original post described what you were doing, few would likely pick what was going on.

So, I have read the sticky again, and I can still conclude that the fact that I can move around and rename the path where the files are stored in, does not change anything, it behaves as if they are relative and the path always updates. In the video you see me doing this and the 'absolute' paths immediately update when opening the linked word doc, as i demonstrate in my vid. It is clear that I have created something godly, as noone (not even me) can ever recreate this behaviour!
PS : Sorry didnt read your reply yet |

Too bad the video isn't working. It indeed had no audio but the resolution should be top notch. Probably a YouTube setting somewhere ? |

The YouTube setting was auto - which is what most people would use. In any event, the max resolution supported by your video is only 720p.
