Default 2007 to mac 2008 and back?

At work I live in a PC world, but like Mac computers. I have given some thought to getting a Mac, loading Mac 2008 office on it. At work I have Office 2007. I am a professor and co-author books, so I need something that is fully compatible, so that if I send a document with changes to a co-author in, say, Office 2007, they can read it, track changes, make comments in the margins, etc. If I go with my Mac idea, will I have trouble moving back and forth between the PC and Mac versions of Office? I saw some indications that this could be an issue when googling it. They also don't seem to be identical programs. Another option is to load Windows 7 on the Mac and run 2007 on the Mac, but apparently the Mac does not then run optimally. Thanks.
