Word forces print to file, without that being chosen. Why?
I have been using Word, and before that WordPerfect for years and years. I've always been able to print to the printer. For some reason, I can't do that. I went to the print dialog. I chose the rponter I want to u se, the same HP printer that I have been suing for over a year. Scrolling down the printer list, I see "Print to file" but there is no checkmark next to it. Still, if I click the print button, it wants to know what file I want to write to. This is maddening. Everything I look at tells me it should not do this but it does anyway. What's the solution? Word help only takes me to the print dialog. It does not tell me how to fix this.

Is your printer online? Can you print to it from another program?

Apparently, nothing can print to the printer. I just went to settings-printers and Scanner. For some reason I could not see my printer. I asked Windows to search for it. It fond it. I set it to the default. I tried to print form LibreOffice but that did the same. Notepad simply wouldn't do anything. In the printer dialog, I clicked on the button to print a test page. It wanted to print it to file. Apparently, this is not only MS Word. I still don't know how to fix it but clearly, there's a larger problem. Looking at printer ports, there's one row that says
File Print to File HP printer name Nothing i have tried there will let me delete that port or edit it. I have no idea how that happened. I wouldn't know how to do that if I wanted to. When I try to delete this, Windows says that it is in use. That's not right. I turned it on and off just to be sure. Any suggestions please? |

Try reinstalling the printer driver and see if that fixes the problem. Go to the manufacturer's web site so that you get the most recent driver for your printer version.
