default file tabs
When I click on File, it highlights the Recent tab. How do I change the default to the Open tab?

It always defaults to the Home tab (which under the File tab shows the recent files). Frankly Microsoft lost the plot with this since Office 2010, and was worse in early releases of Office 2016 than it is now, so I came up with an add-in that helps work around it - see Select Document Template You too may find it useful.

You also can use the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+O.
