Default Word 2010 Increase space between header and first line of text

The first line on each new page of my document is too close to the header. How do I get more space between the header and the text? There needs to be the same amount of blank space below the header on each page.

Default

1. Open Header
2. Select the last paragraph in the header.
3. Open Paragraph Properties.
4. Adjust Space After as needed.

Default Confused...

I think you are telling me to enlarge the size of the header. I have self-published several books, and have never changed the size of the default header, but I did not have this problem of the first line of the regular text being jammed up against the header. What I have been doing is lowering the text on each page by one or two Enter strokes, but that is obviously cumbersome and time-consuming, and I fear the amount of space produced is not always the same. There is no other way to set the amount of space appearing between header and first line of regular text?

The proper way is to change the page setup of the section to tell Word:
1. How far from the top of the page the header starts
2. How far from the top of the page the page content starts

There are plenty of ways to open the Page Setup dialog. One way is Layout > Margins > Custom Margins... (the lower option). The Margins tab controls item 2 above. The Layout tab controls item 1.

Note that if the header is too large for the space allotted to it, it overrides the item 2 setting to push the content further down the page. This is what jthomas666 was effectively telling you to do.

Default Problem solved

Andrew, you're a life-saver. Setting the upper margin (#2) did the trick. Thank you!
