Removing line break and indentation between footnote number and footnote text in Word

I cannot get rid of a line break and indentation between footnote number and footnote text in Word. I have been playing a couple of hours with styles but not reached solution. Suggestions are very much appreciated.

That is not how footnotes are formatted using Word's defaults. Evidently someone has changed something.

Without actually seeing the problem document, though, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

I attach to this message a part of the file I am in trouble with. Thank you for looking into. As you will see, in all footnotes a footnote number is followed by a line break and indentation that is not something I wish to keep.

This is not the product off Word's footnote feature. It was created by another program or by editing footnotes after they were entered.

The text is in the normal style rather than the footnote text style.
The number is in the normal style rather than the footnote reference style.
The "line break" is a page break which does not work as a page break because it is the footnote story of the document. You can place the insertion point just before it and delete it or after it (next line) and backspace. The tab character can also be deleted.

The second footnote in the screenshot was entered using Insert Footnote.
If I were editing this I would recreate each footnote using the Insert Footnote feature.

The simplest solution in this case would be to copy the text of the footnote, delete the footnote reference in the document body, insert a new one, then paste the copied content into the new footnote.
