How to create endnotes with hyperlink references
I can't seem to figure out how to create endnotes with reference number that are hyperlinks. Once an endnote is created, I can refer a second section of text to it and there I have the option of making it into a hyperlink. But I don't see how to make the original reference into a hyperlink. Thanks for any help I am using Office 2007 |

If you insert a cross-reference to a footnote or endnote with the 'inset as hyperlink' option chosen, the cross-reference will link back to the original footnote or endnote reference. Cross-references with the 'inset as hyperlink' option are not formatted as hyperlinks - they appear as normal cross-references (superscripted for footnotes & endnotes if you also choose the 'footnote/endnote number (formatted)' option)

Thanks, Paul. Here's the problem. It is specifically relevant to endnotes, not footnotes. There is little need for hyperlinks for footnotes as they are on the same page.
(1) I create an endnote after some text by clicking on References | Insert Endnote. After I enter the endnote text, I see a little "i" superscript after the text, but it is not a hyperlink and I can't find any way to make it one. It is not even a field, which was a surprise to me. If the paper is dozens of pages long and has dozens of endnotes, a hyperlink would be helpful if getting to the right one. (2) I create a second reference to that same endnote after some other text by clicking on References | Cross-reference | selecting Endnote | selecting Endnote number (formatted) | and then selecting the endnote. I see a little "i" next to that text. It looks similar to the first superscript, but not identical. If I hover over it, I see a finger suggesting it is a hyperlink, but Ctrl+Click foes not jump to the endnote. It shows as shaded so it is a field. If I expand it, I see: Code:

Hi Jennifer,
Footnote & endnote references aren't fields or hyperlinks, as such, but they do function like hyperlinks - double-clicking on a footnote or endnote reference takes you to the corresponding footnote or endnote.

But why would the geniuses at M$FT not keep it consistent with hyperlinks? |

It's what I explained above and illustrated in the document I attached. Sometimes I need to cite the same source multiple times in the text. The first time I reference it, I use Insert Endnote. On subsequent references, I use the Cross-reference feature. For those "additional" references, the superscript is a field and a hyperlink, but it jumps to the text making the first reference, not to the endnote.

Which is what I said in post #4. The macro in the link in post #6 addresses that also.
