Documents for customers link to our work server!
Hi there,
I work for a firm which creates documents for other businesses. We've just found out that some of these (what we call "forms" have a link to a document template on our server. That is, when opened on the customer's computer. My boss puts it best here: 1. The documents do still open, they just may take up to 30s or so to open, during which it says "contacting server for information". 2. Saving the affected documents also takes longer, but they do save, and if saved with different name, the link is broken and the document behaves normally. 3. Opening the affected documents when there is no Internet connection on the customer's computer means they open straight away. Can anyone help? Is there any way to "break" this link? Thank you! |

The most likely problem is that your document is attached to a template, other than Word's Normal.dotm template, located on a server. As a result, Word tries to contact the server so it can re-connect the document with its template. The simple solution is to re-attach the document to Word's Normal.dotm template before sending it to your clients.

Every document MUST have a template attached. The trick is pointing this to a template that DOES exist on the user's machine. The obvious one is Normal.dotm since it is created by Word if it isn't found anywhere. You can change the attached template by clicking on the Document Template button on the Developer Tab.
An alternative is that you provide a template of the same name along with the documents you deliver. It doesn't need the same content, just the same name as the 'attached template' - and tell them to put the template in one of the special locations. When Word opens a document, it looks in 4 locations for the attached template. It stops looking as soon as it finds a template with the same name in these folders... 1. User Templates folder 2. Workgroup Templates folder 3. The same folder as the Word document 4. The actual path where the template was when the 'attached template' was set. And finally, make sure you NEVER deliver documents that are set to refresh the styles from the template as it opens. This is an option in the dialog where you attach a template.
