Default roman numeral numbering

I'm trying to number pages 5-7 of a paper with roman numerals starting with v and ending with vii. Page v is numbered correctly but pages 4,6 and 7 are all numbered vi. If I change any of these pages they all change to the same roman numeral.

Any ideas how to fix this would be appreciated.

I would go to one of the pages that says vi and change the typed text "vi" to a PAGE field.

I tried the page field to add vi to the 6th page and it also adds iv and vii on the fourth and seventh pages.

Tried deleting the iv and vii and it also deletes vi.

If you insert a Page field (no matter how it is formatted) into the header/footer then inevitably it will update any other pages in the same section. Header/footers repeat across pages - which is their raison d'être.

When you want to change the format of a page number (and have that reflected in a Table of Contents) you need a section break and then use the Format Page Numbers dialog.

I've read all that and its like latin to me.

I was able to number pages v and vi properly. Page seven still has a vii. When I remove that manually it also removes v.

At the end of the page before the page where you want the numbering to change, you have to insert a section break. Then go to the footer (or header) and insert a page number field, for example by pressing Alt+Shift+P. Click Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers to open the Page Number Format dialog box and select the page number format of your choice. See also Numbering Front Matter (Ribbon).
