Chapter page references in paragraphs
I am helping someone who knows less than me about Word and am wanting to do something that I think should be doable but can't figure out how.
We have a 200 page document that is broken into chapters. We want a references in paragraphs throughout the document to the page number of various Chapters. Since a table of contents can be generated is there a way to automatically generate the chapter reference page numbers? |

If chapter numbering has been created with Word's auto numbering, you can insert a cross-reference to the numbered paragraph for which you want a reference.
If the numbering is manual, you can wrap a bookmark around it and insert a cross-reference to bookmark text. To display the Cross-reference dialog box, click Cross-reference on the References tab.

Thanks
I was able to place the page references in my original document and got the proper pages numbers filled in. However, when I added another full page at the beginning of the document the page references did not get updated. Isn't that supposed to automatically update? Do I have to do something additional to get the page references to update. Include in the text of the paragraphs, for the page references, is: See list on page {PAGEREF _Ref20295179} See list on page {PAGEREF _Ref20295164} In the page foot, for the page numbers is: {PAGE \*MERGEFORMAT} All page numbers are continus from page 1 do the last page of the document. |

They will not get updated until the fields are updated.

You can force an update of cross-references by switching to print preview (click File > Print) and then return to Print Layout view (press ESC).

Duh!! Something so simple!
You can force an update of cross-references by switching to print preview (click File > Print) and then return to Print Layout view (press ESC). Thanks a bunch. |

I am getting inconsistent results using. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't do anything.
Then there are times when some references update and others don't. Sometimes some references change to a number unrelated to any valid page (page 6 when it should be page 27). How can I insure consistent, correct updates? You can force an update of cross-references by switching to print preview (click File > Print) and then return to Print Layout view (press ESC). |

Ctrl-A, F9
That updates all the fields in the body of the document. Misses headers/footers but unlikely to have xrefs there.

Are you seeing a problem with cross-references or with other fields? I'm asking because cross-references should update without exceptions when you File > Print and then exit the preview. It is normal for Word not to update all kinds of fields, even on print preview.

I am just using cross references based on.
Reference Type Heading Insert reference to Page number The only other thing I am doing is creating a Table of Contents. I have tried a number of things saving the doc after adding new page, before before File>Print after adding new page, File>Print, save file, File>Print, Esc after adding new page, selecting the entire doc, File>Print, Esc and any number of different combinations and I still can't get consistent results. |

Finally got it. Two different ways.
Thanks to "Guessed" above, F9 works. Also instead of File > Print Esc I used File > Print and actually printed a single page. After which the references were updated. Thanks to all for the help. |

Thanks for the update. Note that, in Word, pressing the F9 key has always updated the fields in the selection, only. I'm surprised that an actual printout turned out to be necessary; previewing should suffice for Word to actually update cross-reference fields. Did you try selecting the "Update fields before printing" option?
