Controlling Text Wrapping with Caption
Quote:
Hi Charles, I ran into a small issue which is text wrapping. When the picture is in a table I cannot control text wrapping. For example, I'd like to have the pic on the right and have the body text on the left of it. I kind of got there but the text looks really uneven and weird. I think I might go with the Floating Object and group after all. The reason is that I can move the picture around with the text adjusting real-time and I can fine tune it.
But with the single-cell table, I can't do that. The table does not move as smoothly as the picture and the text does not move intuitively around the object as I am holding the mouse button down. If I run into an error where the picture really misbehaves in the text I might opt for it. Unless if you think there are any benefits that out weight the advantages using the single cell table? Thanks, Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 12-17-2019 at 04:15 PM. |

What are you trying to do with the text-wrapping - wrap it around the table & picture as a whole, or only within the cell? For the former, the solution is to give the table its own wrap format - see under Table Tools|Layout|Properties>Table>Text wrapping.

It works but.... The same as with a picture text wrapping, the text might be uneven with hyper justification or unevenness. But with a picture, I can move the picture around and see how to text reacts to the changes real time. With a table, the text wraps after I move the table. Also, the table cannot be moved as freely as the picture. The table snaps to certain areas around the page, which isn't ideal. |

Here is a screenshot of a single-cell table with an image and caption. This one was set for wrapping around. In moving the table the simplest thing to do is to grab the table handle (in the red circle). It does not snap to locations on my computer.
You are correct that you don't get to watch the text move out of the way. It will still give you documents somewhat less prone to corruption.

Moving a wrapped picture about the page is no freer than moving a table as to positioning with the mouse or otherwise. And in neither case does the text wrapping change until after the object is released (wrapping around a moving picture is only dynamic if you move it via the arrow keys - which is hardly an efficient approach).
Methinks you're fault-finding for the sake of it. If you don't want to use a simple and effective solution for keeping pictures and their captions together, don't; no-one if forcing you to do so. Just don't try making out the solution has flaws that it doesn't. In any event, it was you who asked for a solution for both tables and pictures...

Here's a demonstration from my PC. The table did move better in this demo document than in the report for some reason though, which is a good thing. https://media.giphy.com/media/Zdljvv...s8d9/giphy.gif |

Thanks Charles. I played around with it today a bit and it the table was moving fine. For some reason it was misbehaving in my document the other night. |

You really have a strange attitude for an admin. No I am not fault-finding for the sake of it. What do you take me for? I am just looking for the best solution. And btw you are wrong re: "in neither case does the text wrapping change until after the object is released". |

This is correct. With grouped images, the text moves around as you move it. |

I see no change in text wrapping until the object is released - grouped or otherwise.

Returned to report that the single-cell table is the only viable solution for me after all. Even though the grouped floating object with the caption moves more fluidly and the text wraps around as you move it, I was unable to insert a citation (active field) into the caption.
The single-cell table allows me to do this, which is great! I hope this helps anyone using Zotero. I am not sure how Mendeley or other programs interact with the floating object. Thanks everyone. |
