Spelling check actions
I was previously using Word 2010 and am now using Word 2019.
1. When doing a spelling check, Word 2010 provides a number of buttons including "Ignore once", "Ignore all", and "Add to dictionary", which can be selected either by clicking on them or by typing the indicated keyboard shortcuts [Alt+I], [Alt+G], and [Alt+A] respectively. Word 2019 has the same buttons with the same indicated keyboard shortcuts; however, on my computer, the buttons work but the keyboard shortcuts do not work. Is this a bug in Word or is there a setting I need to change? 2. In Word 2010, the spelling check also has an "Undo" button, with an [Alt+U] keyboard shortcut, which can be used to reverse the above actions. However, Word 2019 does not have this button. Is there another way to undo the previous action in a spelling check in Word 2019? |

Are you seeing the Spelling pane on the side of the window? If so, the keyboard shortcuts don't need you to hold the Alt key down, just click the letter by itself eg [i] to ignore.
The Undo button is normally Ctrl-U. Have you tried that?

Thanks for your reply.
1. Ah, I didn't realize these keyboard shortcuts don't need "Alt+". That answers this question, thanks. 2. Ctrl+U is underline, but I tried the usual Ctrl+Z for undo and Ctrl+Y for redo and found that they do work, but not fully as expected. If I open a document, start a spelling check, and do an "Ignore once", "Ignore all", or "Add to dictionary" action, then the Undo button is enabled with "Undo spelling [action] (Ctrl+Z)" as its tooltip, and if I click on it, it works and enables the Redo button with "Redo spelling [action] (Ctrl+Y)" as its tooltip, and if I click on that it also works. However, there are two anomalies: - The Undo and Redo *buttons* (and the Ctrl+Y redo shortcut) work every time, but the Ctrl+Z undo *shortcut* does not work the first time it is used. - When I reach either end of the undo/redo stack after doing a series of undo and redo actions, the spelling action shortcuts do not work as per their legends, and typing "I", "G", or "A" merely types that letter (instead of executing the corresponding "Ignore once", "Ignore all", or "Add to dictionary" action) and then replaces the action legends with a "Resume" button that works if clicked but not if "S" (or "Alt+S") is pressed as indicated. Are these bugs or am I doing something wrong? |

I don't work for Microsoft so I have no idea on why they code the behaviour the way they do.
But I would expect that the keyboard keys work relative to the 'active window'. When the document is open, the spelling pane is open and you've also been playing in the undo stack, it is possible that the spelling pane has lost focus and you need to click in that to allow the shortcut keys to work again. IMHO, Undo is not completely reliable so it is generally better to make the right decisions in the first place and never have to undo. It may need a second press to firstly give the right window focus as per the earlier suggestion. Try clicking with your mouse so you know what has focus before using the keyboard shortcut.
