Default "Split apart page break and paragraph mark" setting

I was previously using Word 2010 and am now using Word 2019. Word 2010 has a setting under File > Options > Advanced > Compatibility options > Layout options > "Split apart page break and paragraph mark". When this is unticked, inserting a page break (Ctrl+Enter) inserts a page break combined with a paragraph mark, which is not what I want, so normally I tick this setting, and then inserting a page break inserts just a page break, which is what I want.



Word 2010 has 66 of these layout settings, but Word 2019 has only 13, and "Split apart page break and paragraph mark" is no longer there.

The following macro ticks this setting in Word 2010, but it gives an error in Word 2019 ("Run-time error '6313': One of the values passed to this method or property is out of range for this file format.")

Is there another way to apply this setting in Word 2019?

(As a work-around, I can replace all occurrences of "^m^p" [i.e, page break + paragraph mark] with "^m" [i.e., page break] after the extra breaks have been inserted, but I would rather have a way to get back the option that was there in Word 2010 so that they are not inserted in the first place.)

One possibility is to save the document in Word 2010 compatibility mode then the option works e.g.

You will not however be able to take advantage of features that arrived after Word 2010.

The reason for inserting a paragraph mark is that otherwise the last paragraph on one page is in the same paragraph on the following page. When you apply a style on the new page, it applies to the entire paragraph.

Consider, instead of using the manual page break, using "page break before" paragraph formatting for the first paragraph on the next page. It is best to do this by making it a part of a heading style definition.

I support Charles's suggestion to make use of "Page break before" formatting instead of adding a manual page break. For example, you can modify the Heading 1 style to include that setting, assuming that you want all text paragraphs formatted in that style to start a new page. In the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S), type in Heading 1 and click the Modify button. In the Modify Style dialog box, click Format > Paragraph.

Thanks for your replies. However, what I want to do is manually to insert (between two existing paragraphs) just a page break without another paragraph mark attached to it. I could do this in Word 2010 by ticking the "Split apart page break and paragraph mark" setting, but I cannot find that setting in Word 2019, so I am wondering where/why it has gone or whether there is another way to do this.

I recognize that you really want to do things the way you always have, but in a new version of Word. No one here speaks for Microsoft. We are your fellow users and can only speculate.

Graham has told you how to move your document back to the Word 2010 environment so you can use a manual page break without the paragraph mark. You could create a template set up this way and use that as the basis for new documents.

I've told you how to break to a new page without an additional paragraph mark. That is what "Page Break before" formatting does. Doing it this way makes for more easily edited documents. Stefan has given additional information on how to set up a style.

In this discussion, you have had advice from people with a total experience with Word in excess of 70 years, possibly 100 years. You do not have to take that advice. We can only describe the Word that is and help you deal with it.

Thanks for your reply. I understand and appreciate the suggestions but can't move to the Word 2010 environment or apply styles because I am editing other people's documents and can't (mustn't) modify them to that degree. To insert a page break between existing paragraph marks, I can insert a new page-break-with-paragraph mark and remove one of the existing paragraph marks as a work-around, but I was looking for something simpler (and was wondering why the "Split apart page break and paragraph mark" option was removed, or whether it was just moved somewhere that I couldn't see).

It was not moved. No one here can explain what MS does.
I can tell you that the Page Break without a paragraph mark caused a lot of headaches in previous versions where it was the standard. (Not the option, the action in the document.) I again urge you to use Page Break Before formatting instead. It makes for more easily-edited documents.

If you are editing other people's documents the chances are enormous that they are not using the new features of Word, so you could simply saveas and return the document to the latest format before returning the document.

Perhaps easier still is to use a macro to insert the break e.g.

If you use Graham's macro, you may want to set the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Enter to run the macro.
