Page numbers placed in both header and footer: Need each in different script
I have a file with page numbers placed in both the header and footer. Currently it is set such that all the page numbers are in Hindi script. I would like the page numbers in the footer to be in Hindi script, and the page numbers in the header to be in English (Roman) script. In the page number settings window, I do not see any option to specify different scripts for page numbers in the header versus footer.
I can achieve this using field codes. Is there a global setting for the file that will make it easier to do? |

There is a section-by-section setting for the page number format. The second format you want can be done with a field code switch to override the section's chosen format.
Once you have the header/footers the way you want, you can save them into the Building Blocks to insert them as required.

Ok, that is perfect.
Now, let's say the page number global setting is for Hindi script. Then in the footer where I want the page number to show in arabic (English), I add "\* Arabic" into the field code. That works well. And now if I want that arabic number to display in Times New Roman rather than the default setting of Nirmal, is there a switch that I can add so as to specify that this arabic number will display in Times New Roman? |

You can't add a switch to change the font although you can add a CharFormat switch which could have a similar effect but is unnecessary.
Normally the font should be controlled by the paragraph style applied to that paragraph. If that paragraph has both Nirmal and Times New Roman then you can apply a Character style (for TNR) to just the page number field.

This entire book file (700 pages) got made before I started learning about styles. Due to that, I will likely need to implement the CharFormat switch to which you refer. Could you perhaps give me an example of what such a CharFormat switch would look like, in which the Times Roman Font is brought for the particular page number?

You can create and apply the character style at any time. The fact that the document already exists has no bearing on whether you now start to use a Character style.
Either way, you need to create the field along the lines of either {Page \* Arabic} or {Page \* Arabic \* Charformat} While the field code is still showing, select the entire field and apply the font formatting you want. Then press F9 to update. I don't believe the CharFormat brings any benefit to you at all but you are welcome to experiment and may find it helps.

Just did it. Very cool!
One question: What is the difference between: 1. Opening the field code (alt-F9), applying the {Page \* Arabic} code, highlighting the entire field and applying the font formatting "Times New Roman", then closing the field code (alt-F9); VERSUS 2. Opening the field code (alt-F9), applying the {Page \* Arabic} code, closing the field code (alt-F9), and THEN applying the font formatting "Times New Roman". I have tried both the above options, and both seem to work. |

In theory the font formatting needs to be applied to the first character in the field code.
In practice, it makes no difference and that is why I don't bother with Charformat.

Makes sense. Everything is working perfectly, thank you!
