Default Converting table to text (and back) with carriage returns in cells, split and merged cells

Hi,

I have scoured the Internet and can't find an answer to my problem. I need to convert some tables to text and then have them revert to their original format (when instructed). I'm having trouble with the second part. It's easy enough to highlight a table and convert it to text. Trouble is, my tables either a)have split and merged cells, thus allowing headers and subheaders, or b)have text in cells that uses carriage returns.

In the case of the former, if I highlight the text and tell Word to convert it to a table, it is deeply confused about the number of columns to include. Presumably because in row 1 the answer is 1 and in row 2 the answer is 4. In the case of the latter, it treats every carriage return as an instruction to start a new row. I just want text in a box, in two columns (and no, separating the page into columns was not a good option; this was the only one that worked for what I need to do).

Is it possible to fix this somehow? I lack a significant amount of technical jargon, so answers that treat me like a child lacking vocabulary would be especially helpful. Thanks much!

Word is good, but not that good.
For your first problem, do the conversion row-by-row.

The translation from table to text produces a paragraph mark at the end of each row. When you have a paragraph mark within a row, it will start a new row.
You might try replacing the paragraph marks with line breaks. I do not know that this will help.
Find text: ^p
Replace with: ^L

Hmmm. Searching for ^p brings up the carriage returns, but the program won't let me replace them with ^L. Tells me it's illegal. It lets me replace them with a slash, however. But that doesn't help me; in fact, it makes things worse. Now when I try to convert to table it wants me to make 15 columns instead of the two I started out with.

Update: I figured out how to replace with ^L. Now it wants it all to be one column. If I separate with / instead of tabs, it allows me to have two columns, but then insists on producing rows. Oh, well.

It should be a lower-case L. Looks too much like the numeral 1 in this interface. I didn't know it would matter.

Just out of interest – no Word filter for CALS tables? could save me time on imports.
