Default Word gives error message unless I run it in elevated mode - problem from Foxit pdf reader

When I:

1. start Word (not elevated)

2. click on "empty document"

I get this error (translated from dutch ...):
The function that you are trying to perform contains macros or content that requires macro support. When installing this software, you (or the administrator) have chosen not to install support for macros or controls.

I really tried every "solution" provided on many sites, but could not get it right.
Changing options in the Trust Center do not have any effect.

However, I managed to get around the issue when I run Word with Administrative Privileges (elevated).

Any ideas how to really solve this issue?

TIA, Arie

Per the message, when Word was installed, support for macros was not installed. Changing trust issues or running as an admin won't solve the problem.

The solution will be to repair/reinstall Word to install the macro support.

This page looks to have decent directions.

Good luck!

That is not a solution.

You point me to an Office 2010 solution, but I have Office 2019 (Pro Plus). I installed this Office version freshly yesterday and no, there are no options during installation; the complete package is installed.

I verified that I can use macro's in elevated mode, which tells me that macro support is indeed installed, but somehow crippled when not run in elevayed mode.

In older Office versions you could Modify the installation of Office in the Configuration Panel. But, with newer Office versions (2016, 2019) the only options are to either Uninstall or Repair, where Repair completely reinstalls Office.I did such a Repair in the past for a client and found out (the hard way) that together with the reinstall the activation was lost. Not good.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Any other ideas???

Locate the winword.exe executable file, right-click it and choose Properties. If you see a tab labelled Compatibility, clear all boxes, specifically any option that requires Word to run under an administrator account.

If you do not have a Compatibility tab in the Properties dialog box, instead do the following: Right-click the executable file and choose Troubleshoot Compatibility. Choose the option for recommended settings and follow all the steps, up to and including testing the new settings. This should turn off all compatiblity settings set by the operating system.

Apologies. Your profile shows you as an Office 2010 user, so I tried to provide something for that version.

@jthomas666:
indeed I discovered my outdated profile settings after posting my question.
You saw the old version right before I changed them to the correct current values.
So, no need to be sorry

@stefan:
this is not the issue.
I installed Ofice 2019 straight away and I did verify that no compatibility options were set. Also, I verified that it (originally) did not run elevated.
Troubleshooting compatibility does not help. If it did, I would be very surprised, since I run it in the most current version of Windows 10.
I now run it on purpose in elevated mode, because then the error does not pop up ...

My guess is that somewhere under the hood som extra privileges are required for the use of macro's. Since the later versions of Office do not have the possibility to "change" the installation, I have no clues whatsoever where to search ...

Anyway, thank you very much for helping!

Compatibility options for a program, such as Word, is in relation to the operating system under which the program is running.

Since one of the compatibility options involves forcing a program to run "elevated" (= with administrator privileges), it would be worth testing the compatibility settings. Of course, I can't promise that it will work, but trying won't cause any harm...

Default Solved

Hi,

since last time I tried many things to solve this issue.
Today I stumbled on the solution.

I had to uninstall Foxit PDF Reader (free version)!

Apparently there was some interference by Foxit.
I'll post this to Foxit.

So, issue solved!

Thanks for the help in this form.
Best wishes
/Arie
