Default If current text & new footnote won't both fit on page, how to control which gets shifted to nextpage

If a page is filled with text and later on a footnote gets added, MS Word makes a decision as to what gets shifted. From what I see, MS Word prioritizes keeping the entire footnote on the page where the call number for that footnote is. And to achieve that, it shifts the text lower down on the page over to the next page, so that the footnote can take up more space on the page with the call number.

However this is not always desirable.

For example, there is a page on which I have a chart. Above the chart is an introductory sentence with a footnote. The footnote is ten lines long, and to fit it on this page, MS Word is shifting half the chart onto the next page. But I want to keep the entire chart together as a complete chart on the current page, and use the small amount of space at the bottom of the page for the first two lines of the footnote. I want MS word to place the remaining eight lines of the footnote on the next page, at the bottom of the page under the footnote divider. How can this be done?

To do that, you'd have to move the footnote reference so it follows the table. To maintain the desired appearance, though, you could insert a cross-reference to the footnote at the existing location and format the relocated footnote reference as hidden text.

Great idea, thanks! It sounds like there is no overt technique incorporated into MS Word to achieve this. I have implemented what you suggested. The table itself extends to the end of the page, and so there is no text after the table on this page, to which to append a footnote. So I went to the last element of the table, and inserted a footnote there. MS Word created the call number as well as a place in the footnote section down below for pasting the footnote.

The problem I am facing is, when I paste the footnote text, it places the entire footnote on the next page and pulls the final row of the table along with it. There is room there for the final row of the table to remain in its original place and for the first two lines of the footnote to be on that very page down below. But instead, MS Word pulls the entire last row of the table along with the entire footnote onto the following page. How to prevent this from happening?

No matter the document, there is always something after a table. As per my previous advice, attach the footnote reference to that.

I haven't any text after the table. The last row of the table is the final line of the page. However, I've got that row to stay on the page now, along with the first line of the footnote. Before when I was testing it out, I got two lines of the footnote onto that page. Now for some reason only one line of the footnote is fitting there. But that is better than nothing, at least the footnote is on the page. I wish MS Word would have an overt technique for doing this, but we've got it working. Thank you for the tip!

I repeat: No matter the document, there is always something after a table.
At the very least, that 'something' will be an empty paragraph.

One last question on this thread. Although it may seem unrelated, but it is another way for me to solve this problem. Here is the question:

Is there a way to have the first two footnotes on a given page both numbered "1"? And for the footnotes after that to go on counting normally-- 2,3,4,5 etc.

If this is possible, then I have a very nice solution to my problem.

No. Furthermore, it's not apparent how your document could have such footnotes if the problem one is the last. Perhaps you should consider using endnotes.

Ok sure, I see-- that may surely be the case, but I guess I don't see how it would help the current situation...

For some reason the first table goes down ever so slightly when I add a footnote to its last element, as a result of which only one line of the footnote is fitting on this page. And I need the two lines that I had gotten to fit there earlier, as the next page-- the final page of the section-- is tight and cannot accommodate one more line of footnote. And I can't extend this section by another page.

This section has only two pages in it. The first page of the section is the page we've been discussing, with the table on it. This page has two footnotes, and the footnote under discussion is the second of these.

The second and final page of the section has four footnotes, and together with the remainder of foonote #2 from the first page, the page is completely full. It cannot accept the second line of footnote #2 from page one of the section without overflowing onto a new page, which I want to avoide.

So what I had done earlier to solve this was to put the first two lines of the footnote on the first page of the section. Then, I created a footnote on the second page, and added the remainder of the footnote text from footnote #2 of page one, in this first footnote of page two (final page of the section. I then hid the call number as well as the footnote number, and typed "(Continued from previous page, footnote #2)". The problem is that due to the hidden footnote number, the four footnotes which really below to this page, start with number two. Hence my question about having two footnotes #1, followed by #2, 3, 4. etc. on that page. But perhaps if I make the four footnotes on this final page of the section into end notes, it may solve the problem by again number afresh from #1? Will these end notes otherwise have the same format as footnotes, i.e. look like footnotes to the general reader as this is already occurring on the final page of the section? If so, then this will also solve the problem.

In that case I suggest you consider revising the content somehow -
• slightly decreasing the row height for one of more table rows;
• reducing the paragraph before/after spacing, or even the line spacing (perhaps even only for the footnote(s));
• etc.
