Same problem - Word will not open files with a password
I have the same problem as VncentV and PaulHowith with .doc & docx files that have passwords suddenly not opening in Word. The files open on an alternative machine running exact the same software (Office 2016 Windows 10) I have tried repairing Office twice but no improvement. I can create a file with a password on the "defective" machine and it does not open but opens perfectly normally on alternative machine? Any help gratefully received. Many thanks.

Known problem
Same problem here too, just word not excel.
Spent maybe 3 hours with Microsoft tech guy, tried everything, including a clean re-install of office - note this is not the same as uninstalling and re-installing office, you need to use a special app you download. He couldn't even load a previous version of Word. That was a pain using CMD, copying stuff off a notebook from a website etc. And didn't work. He went away to ask about it and came back saying they've got loads of tickets on it. So I'm just waiting for the next version/build. Something else worth noting is that after we re-installed Office365, Word was version 2108. But after clicking update in Account>update options, it upgraded to version 2109. So the version on my 365 account isn't latest one, strange. |

So, 2109 was first available today. |

Version 2109
The new version still has the bug. But let's hope the seriousness of the problem means a quick fix.

Solved
The issue was caused by Bulldog antivirus.
The microsoft guy said you dont need it as long as you have full Windows protection & automatic updates, you can check this in settings, updates. But he did say it might be an idea to put Malwarebytes back on, which we uninstalled before trying Bullguard. |

Malware bytes has also been known to cause problems.

Well done Soffit, for others suffering the same problem you have to uninstall BullGuard to resolve the problem, just turning BullGuard off does not!

Same problem - Word will not open files with a password
I was having exactly the same problems opening encrypted files. It was Bulldog and they are aware of the issue, they gave me a work around fix, Hope it helps it worked for me.
1. Open BullGuard and from the upper menu access Settings > Advanced. 2. Move to the Antivirus section and turn off the Antivirus Protection. 3. Go back to Settings > Antivirus > Tuning. 4. Place a checkmark for "Skip files/folders" and on "Skip Specific Processes". 5. Click on the "files/folders" link and then on the [+] button to add the path of the file to the scanning exceptions and for the Office folder then confirm with OK. 6. Click on the "Process" link and then add the software launcher, word.exe. 7. Go up to Antivirus and re-enable the Antivirus Protection and check if the problem persists. |
