Using numbered list style, how to indent text immediately following heading to match heading indent?
How can I get word to create an automatically number list that formats like this?
Shared album - David Specht - Google Photos I followed Shauna Kelly's instructions on creating a list style that automatically numbers headings 1 2 and 3: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010 | ShaunaKelly.com Heading 2 and 3 are indented at 0.25'' and 0.5'', respectively. The numbering and indenting for the each heading is working great, but I would like the Normal style text immediately following the heading on the next line to align with the indent of the heading above it. However, I can't figure out how to get this to automatically happen. Does anyone know how to do this? I thought about creating two additional Normal styles with the appropriate indent, but then I would have to manually select the appropriate one for each separate paragraph. And then if I were to go and promote or demote a heading, I would have to go back and manually change the styles for the content. Thanks, |

The way I have handled this is to have separate following body text styles for each indent level. An example of this is produced using the free Add-In available here:

Similar to what I'm doing.
For H1, I create a matching B1 for body text for that level, and format the H1 to have B1 as the following paragraph format. Still working out the kinks, as I'll need to create additional formatted styles (bullets, notes, etc) for each heading level. Don't think I'll be able to use the add-ins at work (defense contractor, so high security levels on work computers, but I'll play with it at home. |

You are on the right track.
Keep in mind that once you have something that works, save a template with those styles so you can easily base new documents on those. If you have to use the organizer, look at the vba code in my Add-In. You need to do multiple copies of styles that are based upon one another to get a good transfer, AFAIK. (That has been true since Word 97, at least. I have not tested on Word 2016 or later because multiple copies of styles when you have the organizer up is so easy.) |
