Unhappy "Can't open file. Sorry, something went wrong and filename.docx can’t open." (iOS app)

I have a Word document stored in OneDrive that opens correctly on my PC (Windows 10), but refuses to open in the Word app on iOS (iPhone 6). What's strange is that if I copy and paste the file inside OneDrive (thus renaming the file to something new), the copy will open correctly in the iOS app without issue. BUT... once I exit the Word iOS app, launch it again, and try to open the copy again, the error message returns. (So, in order to work on this document on my phone, I have to rename the file to a new name every single time I want to open it. Naturally, this is driving me insane, since I have to work on my phone a lot.)

Other stuff I learned upon further investigating:

-I have now tested this on an Android tablet using the exact same steps and using the same Word document. I am unable to replicate this issue. So either (1) the issue is specific to the iOS app, or (2) the issue is somehow specific to just my iphone. Still mystified.

-I tried copy/pasting the document's contents into a new word file, pasting just the plain text without any formatting. Even in this new file, the issue persists on iOS.

Thanks for any and all help!

I wonder: would anybody be willing to try to replicate the following to see if this issue is a general iOS issue?

Step 1: Create a Word document on your PC. Add a bunch of text.

Step 2: WHILE KEEPING THE DOCUMENT OPEN, also open it on iOS app. Modify the doc via iOS.

Step 3: Click the "refresh to see updates" button (bottom right) on PC to see the new changes to the document from your iOS changes. Kill the iOS app. On PC, modify/add text in the document again, then Save.

Step 4: Try opening the document in iOS app again.

This should cause the error, and the document will totally cease to work on iOS.

Well, the clear solution is not to open the same document on two devices at the same time.

(Really, that's just begging for problems.)

That’s just silly. The software is designed to allow for collaboration (something I need to use frequently), and doing so breaks the file permanently??? Not cool. 😣

Is this OneDrive Business? That is designed for such collaboration; if it's regular OneDrive, not so much.

I posted about my error message on Microsoft's official forum, and two others replied with the same exact issue cropping up recently for them. It's clearly a recent bug that needs fixing. Given it's not some crazy-obscure error that only I'm having, I don't think "blaming the user" is very helpful or productive advice.

the issue continues, see below

phone - Samsung A71
TWO IDENTICAL ones.
wife's phone does this correctly
MY phone (NickPhone) USED to do this correctly, then suddenly last week does not work correctly.

items - Samsung MyFiles
Microsoft OneDrive
Microsoft Office 365

Phone NickPhone
I have MyFiles on home screen. I can see my INTERNAL STORAGE, and I can see my OneDrive files (I let MyFiles set up a OneDrive link).
I open MyFiles. I go to the OneDrive link. I select a WORD or PDF document. I click on it. I select to OPEN it with OFFICE, JUST ONCE.
the file is attempted to be opened, but THEN get message, "OOPS, something went wrong, cannot open this file (DOCX, or PDF, whatever)
IF i click, in OneDrive link, a JPG file, and select GALLERY JUST ONCE to open an image, the IMAGE opens

(NOTE - my WIFE's phone, and NickPhone up until 1 week ago, DID OPEN and DISPLAY the PDF and DOCX files, but NickPhone now does not)

continuing
if I now go back to HomeScreen, slect the OneDrive icon, and go to the same folder, INSIDE the OneDrive app, and select those files, select to OPEN with OFFICE JUST ONCE, they will open.

if I go into OneDrive icon, and select to DOWNLOAD the file, and it downloads, and I then go to MyFiles, go to internal storage, go to DOWNLOAD, and select the file, it will open

I have sat both phones side by side, gone through permissions, etc. I have reinstalled OneDrive and Office. I have cleared cache. nothing has fixed it

ANY assistance appreciated.
thanks
