Default MS Office Home & Student 2019 - Web-based Word?

I just downloaded Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019 onto a newly purchased W10 machine. When I open Word, it appears that it is a web version that automatically saves documents to OneDrive. I have no need for this feature and would like to save my work locally. Is there a way to open Word without using the apparent Web-based version? This machine is not always web-enabled.

I have another W10 machine, and its older Word app does not depend on Web-availability.

Thanks!

Try changing the Default Save location:

File > Options > Save

should get you to the proper screen.

This comes as the default. You can change it in File > Options > Save

Change the default save location.

Thank you both for your help. I am able now to save docs locally. The larger problem, which I should have better described, is that it appears this version of Word is web-only. If the machine is not connected to the web, I cannot get Word to open. I get a prompt saying that I must restore my web connection. I need to use Office/Word whether or not the machine is web connected. Do I have the wrong version of Office?

You computer probably came loaded with the web-based version. If so, it's possible that your shortcuts are pointing to the online version instead of the local version. Open Word, then go to File > Account to confirm what version of Word is running.

A repair of Office 2019 should make the local applications the defaults.

>>You computer probably came loaded with the web-based version. <<

It turned out that this is the case, and that the desktop software I purchased never loaded correctly.

Thanks to a chat session with Microsoft Support, I was able to install the Office software, which is indeed a desktop version.

Where I erred in my first installation was that the "loading" panel suggested that the download should take just a few moments. After I did not notice any significant progress within a half-hour or so I aborted the download and tried again. The second time I saw a prompt that Office had already downloaded.

With my relatively slow web connection [I did have the machine plugged into my router as opposed to using wi-fi], the download took more than 2 hours when Support helped me with it.

Thanks to all who responded and helped.
