Default Unable to connect Styles to the Navigation column.

I'm building a document made up of book titles and a short review. Using "Styles" and "Heading" I have been copying these titles to the Navigation column by clicking onto "Heading 1" This morning I have been unable to do that. Any suggestions?

You will have to apply heading styles to the text paragraphs you want to display in the Navigation pane. The quickest solution is to apply the built-in headings (Heading 1–9).

Might be that I'm thick but I can find no built in headings (Heading 1-9)

Heading 1 through Heading 9 might not be selectable if either:
1. You are using a different language version of Word which names "Heading" in the language of your version of Word
2. The styles are hidden
3. The styles have an alias and your option is set to hide the built-in name if a style has an alias.

If you post a sample document, we can tell you which of these is the case.

However, regardless of any of these, you can apply a heading style to any unnumbered paragraph by pressing Alt-Shift-Left Arrow or Right Arrow. Once you have a heading, you can promote or demote them with the same keyboard shortcuts.

I don't know how I did it but I started to edit the doc which is 1,500 pages in length and after a couple of changes I noticed that both the page numbers and the lines that went across the pages where I didn't want them had gone. On top of that I found that I was able to access the Styles and headings facility. I suspect that there is a device that allows one to get into the doc and check what happened but I don't know how to use it and I'm satisfied anyway but thanks for your help.

The easiest way to apply styles in Word is via the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S) where you can type in the style names. Or you can use the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S) where you can click style names to apply them.
