Table of contents links in Word that you can click on in PDF?
I have a word document with a table of contents that I inserted using Word's built-in option. The headings are correct and the table of contents table works well in Word (CTRL + left click) taking to you the appropriate page.
Is there a way to change the format so that when I print to PDF, a user can just click on the text in the table of contents and it takes them to that page or do you have to manually enter a table of contents to do this? thanks in advance! |

I'm using Word 2000 and have the same problem. To fix it, I open the Word document in LibreOffice and print from there. Then the links are all clickable.

I believe you must use the "Save as Adobe PDF" item off the main File menu rather than doing a Save As... and selecting PDF format that way. Then, look at the Options and make sure it's selected to "Create Bookmarks" and "Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks." I think in this case it's also a must that your TOC was created based on your Headings. Then in the PDF click on TOC lines and see if it advances to that part of the report. Mine does. I can also display the Adobe bookmarks. I usually have to manually set bookmarks for any attachments or appendices added later. |

Kilroyscarnival - I'm not sure what the problem was, but when I follow your steps it worked. Thank you!

Glad to hear it. By the way, nice nod to Buddy Hackett in your moniker!

Just to note, no problem getting active links in TOC when using Save As PDF in Word without Acrobat. That is true with Word 2010, 2013, and 2019 (365). I no longer have 2016 on this computer but it worked with that as well. Note, this is the Save As method, not printing to Microsoft's Print to PDF driver. (I haven't checked that one lately.)
It may take some fiddling with the Options in the save dialog, but I think it is the default. |
