typing "scr" and problem with "extending selection"
I have a problem with Word. I created an Autotext entry (with F3), so that when I type "scr" the word "Scripture" appears. However, what this did instead is to create an icon of a scroll at the bottom of each page. I think that this also may have caused the E8 combination to not work properly: Anytime I want to extend the selection over more than a single page, the extend selection stops working.
Can you help me solve this? Is there a way to undo the creation of the scroll icon? Is there a way to guarantee that the extend selection option works properly over more than a single page? Thank you, Daniel Matt |

scroll is a built-in autotext entry that adds the page number to the footer in a scroll (which you can select and delete). However if you have created an autotext entry and saved it as scr, then typing scr+F3 should insert the scr autotext entry. Otherwise scr+F3 will insert Scroll. The fact that it doesn't suggests that you haven't actually created such an entry (check using the building blocks organizer).
In any case I would suggest using an autocorrect entry rather than an autotext entry for this. Use #scr as a trigger.

Thank you, but my problem persists. I created an autotext entry for the word "Scripture" and saved it as "scr". When I type "scr" and press F3, the word Scripture does appear but also a page number as a footer inside of a scroll icon. I am not able to delete this icon. How can I delete it?

Go in to Quick Parts > Building Blocks Organizer... and remove the Scroll Building Block.

I did that just now, and then typed scr and F3, and "Scripture" appears and also the scroll icon with the page number. I closed Word and reopened Word, and the same thing happened again. Any other suggestion?
Further question. In a Word document I already created, is there any way to remove the scroll icon in the footer? |

To remove footer (or header) content, double-click the header area to activate the header/footer view. Then select and delete the footer content.

Have you tried deleting, and recreating, the "scr" entry as well?

Thanks. That takes care of the problem of creating an entry that includes that nasty "Scroll icon."
But can you help me with a Scroll Icon in an existing document. I originally created this unintentionally by typing "scr" and now I can't get rid of the icon. It appears as a footer on a particular page. There were also page numbers at the bottom of the page, and I was able to delete those by removing the footer. But Word does not recognize the scroll icon as a footer, even though it appears at the bottom of the page. I am not able to remove it. if you have a suggestion, please tell me. If you are willing for me to send you the file, so that you can try to remove the scroll icon, that would be great! Thanks, Daniel |

Thanks very much. I've uploaded the file (Elijah...). Have a look at p. 36. At the bottom is the ornery scroll icon with a 2 in it. Can you tell me how to remove this? If I delete a few pages (35-37) it disappears, but I'd like a cleaner solution.

The document was added to the body of the document and selecting it and cutting it worked. To be more specific, I selected and dragged the object upwards (away from the page boundary) and then I cut it from the document.

I must be really dumb. I can't seem to do this right. Can I call you, or could you call me?

Now I was able to do it. Dragging it outside of the little box in which it appeared, then cutting it. Thanks.

Yes, as I wrote, dragging & dropping turned out to be a required first step. I am not sure why, but I'm guessing that the reason is that the object was on top of the footer area.

How interesting!
Since you were so helpful, let me try one more problem I've had. In some Word documents, created in Word 2013, there is something wrong with the F8 function. When i try to extend the selection over more than a page, the selection turns off; i.e., I cannot select more than a page. I've discovered that if I save the document as a older version of a Word document, (97-2003), then the selection process works fine. Any idea about how I can correct this without having to resort to this strange, inconvenient procedure? |
