possible to repeat text with numbered list?
Hello,
I have a block of text that I want to repeat later in my Word document. If I create a Bookmark and then a Cross-reference to the Bookmark text, that works well except for one problem. The block of text contains a numbered list. In the block it's numbered 1, 2, 3. In the copy it shows up as 4, 5, 6. If I do "Set Numbering Value" in the copy, that works only until I do F9 to refresh, then it goes back to 4, 5, 6. Is there any way to avoid this problem besides hard coding numbers and letters? Thanks, Burt |

You can bookmark each paragraph separately. Be sure to omit the paragraph mark (¶) at the end of each paragraph. Then insert two cross-references for each paragraph/bookmark: one for the number and one for the text. You can add a space in between.

Hi Stefan,
Thank you for your response. To give a little more info, my objective is to have a block of text that mirrors another block of text so that I only have to maintain it in one place. It's for an exercise guide with solutions to the exercises at the end. I'm showing the original exercise with the solution, and some of the exercises contain numbered lists and lettered lists within those numbered lists. If I have to create a separate bookmark for every single one of those steps, it's a ton of work .... plus if I understand you correctly, I'd have to modify both copies any time there's a change to the number of steps, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of creating the bookmarks in the first place. Seems like I'd be better of just hard coding my numbered (and lettered) lists ... or not creating the bookmarks and just manually doing a copy-paste whenever there are changes.... unless there's a better option. I don't really know.... Thanks, Burt |

Yes, if you add more steps, you'd have to manually add more bookmarks and cross-references; that is true.
However, there is a way: If you use SEQ fields for the numbered steps, you should be able to bookmark a whole text range and insert a cross-reference to the bookmark text. Updating that cross-reference wouldn't affect the numbering sequence.
