Setting tab character with Follow number with:
I thought I had the solution that worked for me, but I was using the "Text indent at:" which is for the second line in the paragraph. I was only using a single line, so was seeing improper results for my needs.
For my requirements, my organizations has two criteria. 1) After the auto number, two spaces are required before the beginning of the text 2) The paragraph has to be left indented. As far as I can tell thru my research, a tab is always calculated from the left edge. The default tab in Word is .5. My auto numbering looks like... 1.1. 1.2. 1.2.1. 1.2.2. 1.3. 1.3.1. 1.3.1.1. ...so that means the default tab of .5 makes the spacing inconsistent between the auto number and the beginning of the paragraph. I can't find if it's possible to set a tab by style from the end of an auto numbering no matter the level. Even if antiquated with the two spaces, I can't get around this requirement. I could simply add two spaces after the numbers in the "Enter formatting for number:" box, but I'm going to use cross references to those paragraph numbers within the document. The two spaces will show up in the cross reference. Any thoughts? |

The problem arises because unless you are using a monospaced font (such as Courier), the numbers take up varying amounts of space. Then you have a stepwise problem when they hit double figures.
Your best option may be to set the number to right align so the trailing full stop always appears at the same vertical alignment and hence the space can be consistent to the text

Thanks Andrew. Unfortunately I won't be able to mess with the font or the alignment.

That default tab is just a suggestion. Word generally lets you set the tab at very small intervals, and they don't even need to be the same from level to level. In the example doc, I have the tabs set differently so that although they are tabs, mostly to the human eye it looks as though they are 2 spaces after. Level 1 is set with a 0.2" tab, level 2 has a 0.35" tab, level 3 is 0.45 and lever 4 tab is set at 0.6. I could have chosen 0.33 and 0.41 if that looked better, but I would have to type in that number, using the incrementer in the numbering tab is set for 0.05 intervals
