Problem with Ribbon tabs
When I change the order of the tabs in the ribbon my new order stays put only for a few sessions, then the order reverts back to some kind of 'standard order'. I have the standard tabs + five additional ones. How do I get my preferred order to stay put? Lup |

Did you try changing the order in the "Normal.dotm"?
1. Right click on "Normal.dotm" 2. select "open" 3. make the required changes 4. save and close |

Changes in order of Ribbon tabs are not saved in the normal template using this method. Lup: I assume you are modifying the Ribbon using the Customize the Ribbon dialog. That should stick. Your customizations should be stored in the file Word.OfficeUI. Are you on a corporate network? Do your custom tabs stay with you? Do you have any other versions of Word on your computer? (They share the CustomUI file.) See: |

I'm on my own WiFi network On that network there are at the moment two 64 bit HP laptops with Win10, one has Office 2013, the other 365. The most recent problems are with 365 but I have the feeling 2013 has misbehaved in a similar way (Will check!) I had both 2013 and 365 on the same system but ran into problems with 2013 updates affecting 365 so I uninstalled 2013. The custom tabs stay. In fact, the problem is mainly that the custom tabs don't stay where I want them. The amount of time it takes for them to decide to return to their previous location varies, obviously some kind of triggering event is involved. I haven't been able to find out which event except that a close down + restart of Word has to be included. The changes never take place mid-use. But sometimes a number of close down-restart events are needed before the change happens. _Lup |

More observations
1. The problem is present in both my Win10Pro PCs. Office 2013 in one, 365 in the other.
2. Ribbon tabs return to default order after a close/restart of Word 3. The file Word.officeUI seems to contain specific info for add-in tabs only when they have been moved. After a restart of Word, all info of the add-ins has disappeared from Word.OfficeUI, but the tabs as such remain and are operative. -Lup |

I wish I could tell you what is happening, but I stopped using the Customize the Ribbon Dialog quite a while back. I can tell you that changes to the QAT are also stored there by default these days. They used to be in a separate file.
If this is sufficently annoying, use the XML modification methods and store in a separate global template (not normal.dotm). Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science) by Greg Maxey, MVP RibbonX: Customizing the Office Ribbon by Robert Martin, Ken Puls, and Teresa Hennig I've never had problems with those modifications moving around. |

Thanks, Charles!
It's only a minor nuisance and I can easily live with it. But sooner or later I'll take a look at your suggested ways of making the tabs stick, I don't like applications getting the better of me! This problem can be considered solved. Thanks again! _Lup |
