At several places in my document I see a message {XE...} (see attachment) and I don't know what that means nor how I can get rid of it ???

XE fields are what Word uses to create & maintain Index entries. Clicking on the ¶ symbol on the Ribbon's Home tab will toggle their visibility on/off.

Ok Paul, but is it possible to set these markings OFF (or remove them) in the options ?

No, there is no option for that. Deleting the XE fields will result in the corresponding Index entries being deleted.
