Default Page Numbering

Hi, I was wondering whether it's possible to number pages to 3 levels. e.g. 1,1,1? First number is the chapter number, second number is the section number and the third number is the page number?

The section and page are easily inserted with a pair of fields i.e. { SECTION }.{ PAGE }
How have you numbered your chapters?

I would assume it would be done by styling your chapter and section with Heading 1 and Heading 2 respectively and then setting the page number to include the Heading 2 number. This will display the page number with all three parts in the {Page} field and these will also show up in the TOC entries.

Yep, my document is styled comprehensively.

My chapters are called Chapter 1 etc. If I select StyleRef for a new field, it adds this whole thing in rather than just the number. However, I'm unable to even add a StyleRef field in a footer. I select the all the field options and click ok and I get nothing. It works ok in the body of the paragraph.

If you have (say) Heading 1 in the body of the document, containing Chapter 1 etc then you can get the number from the Chapter by adding a number switch to your Styleref field in the footer

e.g.
{ STYLEREF "Heading 1" \# "0" }.{ SECTION }.{ PAGE }
would give you 1.1.1 etc.

My bad, looks like I've got two 'Heading 1' at the start of each chapter, one is called CHAPTER 1, but it's not typed, it's an automatically generated number. i.e. it's a list with CHAPTER added to the start and formatted with 'Heading 1'. The second 'Heading 1' is the name of the chapter e.g. GENERAL. So at the moment, using your code for chapter spits out the following chapter numbering scheme, GENERAL.1.1. I couldn't figure out why I was getting this since I didn't have 'Search from bottom of page' selected. Hope that makes sense. So if I'm correct, I need to use ListNum instead of StyleRef for this one, but I don't know what values to put in ["Name"] and [Switches]. Where did you find this information by the way? I found this site >> http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/fields.htm#Switch, but it's not comprehensive enough. Not much info about this stuff out there it seems.

EDIT: I found the reason for the problem of StyleRef not showing anything:

This indicates that the StyleRef field is referring you to blank text. In the case of a paragraph style, an empty paragraph formatted in the style. In the case of a character style, a space formatted, by itself, in the style.

Hmm, perhaps another option is to use an 'Index' field, but I'm not sure which switch to use and what parameters to use after the switch to attach it to the numbered list.

Scrap that, looks like Index is something else entirely.

gmayor, I think I'll just name my chapters manually, create a new style just for them and use your code to generate the numbers. Seems to be working now, many thanks.

Now I'm working on getting my section numbering working. Looks like you can't restart section numbering willy nilly, so unfortunately, that brings me back to trying to link to a number in a numbering scheme. hmm

Unless it's possible to extract the number from the Style of the sub heading? e.g. 1. Introduction, is it possible to get the number 1 from it somehow?
