Default Bounding Boxes

Good Morning,

Previously when I used book mark function and cross reference to insert text across my documents the fields appeared in a bounding box when highlighted.

Creating new ones today the boxes seem to be absent.

Since this method does not use insert field I cannot use the properties menu on the developer menu to opt to have one.

Can someone tell me where I should be looking?

Thank you very much.

Barney.

Cross-reference fields have never been inserted in a 'bounding box'. Perhaps you're referring to field shading, the behaviour of which you can alter via File|Options|Advanced>Show document content>Field shading.

Hi Macropod,

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately (for me) it deepens the mystery, if they are not book mark and cross references, what an earth have I done?

Looking at the drop downs on the cross referencing menu I cannot see the fields there so presumably they are some kind of 'quick part'.

without expecting you to be clair voyant (!), can you think what I may have created or where I should be looking. Or indeed the best resource for learning method for achieving what I am after which is:

When template is opened there are a variety of boxes which, if the first one is filled in it propagates to the boxes throughout the document.

Thanks so much, once again.

Kind Regards,

Barney.

Without seeing the actual document, one can only guess. From your additional details, it seems you may be using formfields or content controls - perhaps even ActiveX controls.

If you can attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive), somewhere here should be able to decipher its content pretty quickly. You do that via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Ok, well, I feel pretty foolish about this but I would like just to get the technique sorted and move on as I need to get the document finished!

Attached is a file with two bounding boxes. Change the text in the top one, click in the bottom one and press f9 for it to update.

What am I missing that is stopping me repeating this?

Added supplementary, if it could be made to do this without pressing F9 that would be perfect.

Thanks everybody, much appreciated.

What you have done is to insert a text content control into the document, which you've bookmarked. You've then inserted a cross-reference to that bookmark and, because the content control has been bookmarked, it too appears in the cross-reference.

Take a look at Repeating Data Using Document Properties Content Controls and Other Mapped Content Controls for a somewhat simpler method of replicating data.

Macropod, you are correct and I have manged to replicate. Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to help the helpless, it is very much appreciated.

Charles, thanks for the link, I did look at the methods you suggest and you may be right about them being the way to go. My desire, however was not to mess with the format of the document behind the scenes too much, I guess at least if use text control boxes I can label them for the right contents.

All information (and counter arguments) gratefully received.

With Kind Regards and Thanks,

Barney.
