Smile Spanish and French toolbars in current Word version

Fourteen years ago, I created templates that had the Spanish and French foreign characters. I was able to load them into the startup folder of Word and they were available when Word was opened.

Now, I cannot figure out how to do this. I can see that they must be managed as add-ins, but I do not understand how to do this.

Can anyone help? I need step-by-step instructions.

Thank you very much.

You can load them as add-ins in exactly the same way. Put the templates in the Word Startup folder - If you have not changed the preferred startup folder it can be located (in English language versions of Windows) by typing
%appdata%\Microsoft\Word\Startup
in the Windows File Explorer Address bar and pressing Enter.
Then restart Word. The toolbars will appear on the add-ins tab of the ribbon.
Or you could recreate a new template with a custom ribbon tab - http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tip_p...bbon_main.html and dropdown menus.

Default Still confused

I apologize that it has taken me so long to write back. I was unaware that you had responded to my question. I do thank you for responding. Unfortunately, while I can put the templates (macro-enabled) in the Startup folder, I do not have the same success that I did 15 years ago. Sometimes I see the French and Spanish symbols, sometimes I do not. Should I be resaving these templates as dotm? Is there something I am overlooking? I have tried to follow your steps.

Thank you again.

Alan S.

I didn't look at your code, but the symbol buttons appear on the addins tab when the templates are installed as I suggested, however there may be security issue involved so you could open the templates in Word and save them as DOTM format and they would still work. To that end I have done that to confirm (attached). You will of course have to remove the DOT format templates from the startup folder or you will get two sets of buttons.

The real problem is that your templates do not insert the correct symbols. I have modified the code for first few in the French toolbar to insert the correct symbols. You will have to modify the code for the rest if they are to produce the correct symbols in the same way.

If you add the Windows Character Map tool to the Windows task bar, you can select the characters required and read the values to use in the macros as shown in the examples I changed.

Just for fun, while on lockdown from Kung Flu, I have also added your accent commands to the Home tab of the ribbon in a third add-in template which can be used instead.

If you can, go into the templates using Word 2003 and make sure your toolbars are visible.

Otherwise, you can use vba to turn them visible but you'll need to know the name of the toolbar.

They will only be visible on the Add-Ins tab. However, once they are visible there, you can put them on your QAT. To do that, you would want to:
  1. Save your template in .dotm format (after making the toolbars visible).
  2. Use the Madify the QAT dialog (more commands) and find your toolbars under the Add-Ins Tab.
  3. Add your toolbars to the QAT.

Templates fixed. Use either the two originally named add-in templates or the combined one, with Home Tab ribbon commands
