Updating style reference for many files at once
I'm working on a project that involves updating the style on a couple hundred Word documents at once. I used a template, but I didn't realize until I was nearly done that creates a link to the template file that automatically updates every time the files are opened.
I stored the template in a test folder which should be cleaned out regularly, so keeping it where it is is unappealing. Is there a way to move the template and update all the links at once? Or do I need to go in and update them all manually? Worth noting, these files are used by several dozen users on a network shared drive, so any update that only works locally will not get the job done. I don't mind using macros if they're the right tool for the job. Thanks. |

Investigate using Quick Style Sets.
Note that they will contain all styles that are set to be in the Quick Styles Gallery. |

I suspect the answer will be to just update them all manually - it's not that scary a task, just a couple hours worth of work to give us proper control over something our whole team will be using for years to come. But I wanted to look for faster options. |

You can use a macro.
A Global StyleSheet in Microsoft Word? If doing it manually or with a macro, remember to turn off any option to automatically update styles from the template. What happens when I send my document to someone else? Will Word mess up my formatting? Leaving this option checked is asking for trouble. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 05-07-2019 at 06:59 AM. |

When Word opens a document it looks in 4 places for the template. If a template with the same name appears in one of those four locations, the document accepts that template as its current source. The locations in order of play are:
1. The same folder as the document 2. The user templates folder 3. The workgroup templates folder 4. The path the 'attached template' field shows (ie in Templates and Addins dialog) This means you can move the template from its test location as long as you put it in one of the locations 1-3.
