Default No MS Word "Recent Documents" from Start Menu

Hi Guys....

Windows 7 running MS Word 2010.

Clicking the Start menu and hovering over Microsoft Word 2010 doesn't show "Recent" entries (and there are some!) in the same way that MS Excel does (see the attached screenshots).

I can't find a setting to enable/disable Recents in Word: all I can find on the web is references to clearing/modifying/changing the quantity of Recents.

The Screenshots show Excel from the Start menu, Word from the Start Menu, and proof that Word has Recents, even though they aren't on the Start Menu.

This is starting to really affect me: can any kind soul help???

Do you have any Word addins? Try disabling them. If solved, re-add one at a time until you identify the culprit.

If that doesn't work, backup your Registry. The Recent lists are stored there, and you're going to change it.

Run Regedit and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\W ord\User MRU
[the "16.0" will be different for you, probably 13 or 14]
[the "User MRU" might be only "MRU"]

The above is for my Word in Office 365 on Win10—the main thing you're looking for is "MRU", which stands for Most Recently Used. You'll find it in the other Office apps registry entries too, and maybe at various other locations within the Registry.

When you find above, delete whatever's in it & close Regedit.
Open a couple of Word docs.
Close Word.
Do those now show up in Recent?

Word recreates the MRU entries and changes them as you work with docs. You can compare the Registry entries of Word & Excel, if you want to see what a working MRU looks like when it's at home.

Fyi if you get to Office 2016 or 365: Outlook now has MRU for its 'Attach file' function—no more hunting thru your folders to find a file you just closed. Nice time & frustration saver if you email many files per day.

Default Nice try, but....

Thanks for the reply, Lugh.

For Windows 7 MS Office 2010 the regedit location is:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\W ord\File MRU

On trying to delete all of the entries (following a regedit backup), not surprisingly the "Default" value cannot be deleted.
I deleted the rest, then restarted word and saved a couple of blank documents.
Closing Word, then hovering over it in the Start Menu did exactly as before (i.e. nothing!).
All the old "Recents" available from Word's File/Recent had gone; just the two new ones were present.
So it looks like the "hovering" Recents are not the same as the File/Recent Recents.

Any more ideas???

Default Wibble!!!

(a word indicative of a joyous conclusion!)

Thanks Moonshine!!! - the routine in the third of your links (removing cached AutomaticDestinations) worked, and my jump lists are now restored (or at least, they are present now and being rebuilt).
Note that this fix does NOT remove "Recents" from within the application, so clueless lunes like me still have some pointer to what they were last doing!

Thanks to all who offered help - it's much appreciated!
