Create booklet that folds along the long axis of the paper?
Hello,
I would like to create a long and skinny booklet using 8.5x11 paper such that each page (assuming one piece of paper has 4 pages print on it) is 4.25 wide x 11 in tall. The landscape and portrait orientation in page setup both seem to keep the fold perpendicular to the 11 in side of the paper so you always get a 5.5x8.5 page. Is the 4.25x11 page possible in word? It seems pretty fundamental. Thanks |

Create a custom 4.25x11 page size and use that with the document set for bookfold (PageSetup>Margins>Multiple Pages:Bookfold).

I tried to make the page 4.25x11 and also 11x4.25 and in both cases the fold still cuts the 11 in half. Making the page 4.25x11 seems to make the printer print 2 pieces of instead of 1 for a 2 page test case. I don't know how a 8.5x11 printer divides up a 4.25x11 print job so I don't really know how to debug it

Unfortunately, as you have discovered, Word treats a ‘Tall’ brochure differently when the Bookfold option is used. Click the image below to see a short video on how I create a portrait ‘tall’, 4-page brochure on A4 paper. The Letter size should be similar. First, click the Page Layout tab. Click the Margins tab and opt for ‘Narrow margins’. You can of course use your own dimensions. Now click the Columns tab, then the More Columns option. Click Two in the Presets and the Line Between is optional. If it is used, it can be removed at any time (say before printing) if you require. Use the Equal Column option which should be selected by default. Add content to the left column (back - page 4). Add content to the right column (front – page 1). The center line only appears when content is added). When the right column, page 1, is complete, continuing with further content creates another page (pages 2 – 3, inner pages) where further content is added. When your brochure is complete, check the Print Preview - page 1 (4 – 1), then page 2 (2 – 3). In the print settings, opt to print out Page 1 (4 – 1). Put the page back in the paper feed tray, upside down and in the correct orientation and in the print settings, opt to print Page 2 (2 – 3) on the back of Page 1 (4 – 1). When complete, folding the page along its long axis creates the tall, 4-page brochure you require. |

Thanks guys,
Moonshie is doing exactly what I thought necessary given the restrictions in Word. Not too painful with only a few pages but gets to abe a pita when doing a larger booklet. First have to compose it, then fint the page count and number the columns and finally rearrange the pages using cut and paste. |

The technique I use to print 4-1/4"x11" booklets is to first print from Word to a PDF, and then use Adobe Reader to create the tall format booklet. This requires an extra step, but is pretty straightforward. The full details are shown in this video: How to print a 4-1/4 x 11" tall booklet - YouTube
