Default Irritating formatting issue in Table of Contents - page number "dots" disappear

Hi all - any ideas on the attached would be appreciated. In my TOC, the level 1 headings should have a row of dots between the heading and page number, but in some cases the dots are missing. The headings all have the same standard format etc. I've looked at all the variables that I can think of.

Any ideas would be very gratefully received.

Cheers

Eriks

You evidently have an extra tab-stop in the relevant TOC Style that doesn't have leader dots and, because the heading entry is so short, results in the page number shifting.

Brilliant - thanks Paul. I added a series of white dots to the heading, and the problem went away. Thanks again.

That's entirely the wrong approach. For a demonstration of how to do it the right way, see: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...html#post52345

I agree, you want to change the TOC style, not doctor the heading.

I agree it's the wrong approach, but it fixes the problem. I'm very hesitant to make changes to the template - chances are I'll wreck the whole document :-)

No, it doesn't fix the problem. It's an ugly kludge to work around a failure to fix it and would have to be repeated in every document with a similar issue. Moreover, adding "a series of white dots to the heading" doesn't properly replicate the appearance one gets with leader dots.

And, if that's not bad enough, wait until you need to cross-reference such a heading...

  1. You would not be making changes to the template, but to the document.
  2. It does not make changes to the entire document, just the TOC.
  3. Adding the white periods does not fix, at best it masks it.

One would if that's where the source of the problem lies and there could be multiple documents affected by the issue.

It's a corporate standard template - I'll leave it alone. I'm happy with my dodgy work-around :-)
