Incorrect page-numbering in a long Word document
Hi everyone. I'm new here.
I'm trying to revise a roughly 450-page Word document where each chapter lives in a separate section because most page numbers need to be Roman when others need to be Arabic instead. The first page of each chapter stays unnumbered and so does any page showing only captioned pictures. Each time I renumber the Arabic-numbered pages and save the document, the computer undoes some page number changes. So what am I doing wrong? What should I do to make machine keep the correct page numbering? |

Without knowing exactly what you're doing and/or seeing documents containing before & after snapshots of updates that cause the problem, it's unlikely anyone will be able to diagnose the issue.
Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive - and only post the minimum needed to verify the issue)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

I agree that a sample would help.
Page numbers are a part of headers/footers which are a part of sections. Here is my information on how these work. You can use the "different first page" setting to not have page numbering at the beginning of a chapter by starting each chapter with a new section. You could try to do the same thing with the pages with figures. I'm not sure you want to do that, though. If you are restarting page numbering with each chapter, that section setting would carry over to a new section starting in the middle of a chapter. It could also give you many more sections which makes editing tougher. More practical might be to use white text boxes with no text in the pages where you want no page number. Place those over the page number. This is also going to make for tougher editing. If you are going to have a table of figures, are you going to have it reflect page numbers that are not there? |

Mr. Kenyon,
Thank you for replying. I'll try to post some document parts if my boss will let me do that. We're preparing to republish the book. So I'm editing someone else's document. We've already done most of what you suggest. Each chapter stays in a separate section, I choose "Different First Page," give pictures their own sections, and put some pictures into tables to anchor their captions under them. Other captions move vertically when the computer re-paginates the document. You're hearing about captions because some captions go partly into some footers where they seemingly touch the page numbers |

I think I've corrected the page numbering because you've helped me, folks. Thank you.

I spoke too soon, Mr. Kenyon. Each time I correct the page numbering, the computer changes it again. At first, I thought it did that because I forgot to begin numbering on the unnumbered first page of a chapter. But I'm stumped and wouldn't know what to show you and the other experts. I'm a Unix guy. So I'm not intimately familiar with any Microsoft product.

Back in post #2, you were asked to supply a document demonstrating the issue. You still haven't done that...

Thank you for the reminder. I know that I haven't supplied a document. The one I'm working on is a 502-page one I'm preparing for republication. So maybe I can show everyone a screenshot.

Everyone, I'm looking for a way to post some screenshots from the document. Meanwhile, the machine numbered pages 1-53 correctly, left pages 54 and 55 unnumbered because I needed it to do that, and put a 55 in the footer on page 56. Page 54 lives in a one-page section, page 55 is the first page of the next section, and page 56 is the next page of that section.

Screenshots are no what is needed - we need an actual document.

I'll try to post it if the company president will let me do that. But since we're preparing republish that copyrighted document, I hesitate to share it online. A 502-page single-spaced Word document is small enough to post?

Thank you, Mr. Kenyon. I'm still hoping the company president will let me post a document part.
