Default list of documents come up in random order - any ideas how to sort this?

Can anyone help? Recently when I have opened the list of documents in a file in Word the list appears out of sequence - e.g. when I save a document I usually begin with a date - 100717. Now these dates appear out of order. I know all the old mistakes of leaving too many spaces between digits or letters but it is not that - the whole list of documents appears to be random.
Ideas please - thanks
