Default Why is drop cap feature not working?

Using MS Word 2010. Following instructions, I clicked on the "Insert" tab, located the "Drop Cap" feature, but it is greyed out. It is not clickable. In other words, it does not work. What could be the problem? Note: I am using a legitimate copy of MS Word supplied by the university I was associated with.

Never mind ---- just figured it out. One has to first of all type the capital letter one wishes to drop. Having done that, one selects the letter, at which point the "Drop Cap" feature is clickable and works.
