Default How to change multiple hyperlinks in word 2019

Hi again

I use framespages with files that link to other documents that get called up by the hyperlinks into the assigned frames in the framespage

Each document can have hundreds of hyperlinks.

For some weird reason word changes the hyperlink addresses for all the links

rather than re-link them all individually how can I do a search and replace of a large group off affected hyperlinks to replace the changed link addresses with the proper link addresses?

I have tried the view that show the links as per other advice, the change of the affected link addresses is updated but it still uses the original addresses.

Hyperlinks have both a hyperlink address and a display string. Which do you want to change?

Default Need to change the hyperlink address

The actual hyperlink address is what needs to be changed, the display string is shown in place of the hyperlink code, that does not need to change

For example the original address might be ...

K:\000 - Log Avatar\00 - Avatar Base\A - Life H0 1 - Life.doc#StorageMain

and I want to keep the bookmark so i'd want to replace...

K:\000 - Log Avatar\00 - Avatar Base\A - Life H0 1 - Life.doc

in say 1,000 hyperlinks within that document.

with say...

K:\000 - Log Avatar\00 - Avatar Base\A - Life H0 101 - Life.doc

so that this appears in all the hyperlinks leaving the original bookmarks unchanged but with the new address

and....

... another issue I am facing is an upgrade of the files to the new docm format instead of doc

so I might want all the links changed from

K:\000 - Log Avatar\00 - Avatar Base\A - Life H0 1 - Life.doc

to

K:\000 - Log Avatar\00 - Avatar Base\A - Life H0 1 - Life.docm

with the original bookmarks attached to each.

Hoping you can help, as otherwise it would be a pain to have to reset every single link manually when there are thousands of them.

Note:

Using the 'Alt +F9' to show the fieldcodes and then modifying the fieldcodes that are displayed doesn't work as the changes aren't saved back to the hyperlink addresses...

yet if I change the hyperlink address using edit hyperlink "Ctrl +K" dialogue, the changes are reflected in the shown fieldcodes.

so I need a way to mass-modify the actual hyperlink addresses, not the displayed field-codes

You can expose the hyperlink field code via Alt-F9, then use Find/Replace to change the links. Once you've done that, press Alt-F9 again, then Ctrl-A, F9 to complete the updates.

Hi There

Cheers for your help... but need further detail re the process

Alt F9 exposes fieldcodes that are more than whats shown in the edit hyperlink dialog, they include the bookmarks and introductory code as well and the link info seems to be separated into a lot of % based gobbledegook

I need the "Dummies" approach

1/ the fieldcode as exposed by alt F9 doesn't seem to be copyable [copy just recreates the display text

so how do i copy it for use in find/replace dialog

2/ once the copy procedure is established, what part of the code am I selecting as the replace string?

In terms of the code as appears in the edit hyperlink dialog...

I would be trying to replace the section before the bookmark...

K:\000 - Log Avatar\00 - Avatar Base\A - Life H1 1 - Search 1.doc

with

A - Life H1 1 - Search 1.docm

If you press Alt-F9, the hyperlink field codes should display as:
{ HYPERLINK "K:\\000 - Log Avatar\\00 - Avatar Base\\A - Life H1 1 - Search 1.doc" }
You can select as little or as much of the field code as you want, then copy & paste it into the Find/Replace dialogue. If you know that 'A - Life H1 1 - Search 1.doc' doesn't appear anywhere else in the document, that's all you need for the Find expression. I wouldn't recommend deleting the path, though. Rather, if you need a relative path, see the
Word Fields and Relative Paths to External Files 'Sticky' thread at the top of this forum: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...nal-files.html
