Default can word become protected thru add-ins?

I want to merge or combine word documents, which I have never done before, but when I choose the two documents, it says it can't merge because one is protected. I checked under File>Info about protection and it seems like neither are protected. We use, especially for these documents, PPC add-ins for what's called Smart Practice Aids. can protection that is undisableable come through this means? the file is not read-only. I can edit it via the keyboard. Thanks

Best way to combine a few documents, in my opinion:
  1. Create a new document based either on the same template or on the first of the other documents.
  2. If you have text, go to the end of the new document.
  3. insert a Next-Page section break.
  4. Insert the next document, either by copy and paste or Insert > Object > Text from file

You will have the best results if all of the documents are (1) based on the same template and (2) use the same styles for formatting.
