Highlight colors have changed to eliminate yellow
The most recent version of Word has changed the entire color palette to eliminate the color yellow. This affects the whole spectrum available for fonts, highlights, etc.
One outcome is that the yellow option in Highlights is now gone. (All the other highlight colors are too dark to work as highlights, except pale gray.) Since yellow is by far the most popular highlight color in the world, to the point that "yellow highlights" is practically the generic term for highlights, this revision of the color palette is baffling as well as frustrating. In Word, you can use the "Shading" function in the Paragraph section (under Home) to create a workable highlight, but you can no longer get yellow. In PowerPoint, you can't highlight at all because that Paragraph function in Word doesn't appear in PowerPoint and, again, all the other highlights are too dark to use. I've searched for a way to edit the highlight colors but it seems impossible. Has anyone else confronted this problem? Any workaround to get yellow? Any explanation from Office why this bizarre change to the palette has been made? Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 03-29-2019 at 11:37 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

Which release/version of Word? You can find this under File > Account?
Insider Program? Do you see the problem if you start in safe mode? Language? I am not seeing this. My Word updated yesterday. I have release/verrsion 1902. Here is a screenshot. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 03-29-2019 at 11:37 AM. |

Which Office theme has been applied to the document? Try a different one.

Stefan, at least on my computer none of the Office themes have made any difference.
As far as I know, document themes have no influence on Highlighting colors. Shading might be but highlighting does not seem to use theme colors. |

Apologies, I forgot to say that I'm running Office 365 ProPlus, version 1902.

Again apologies for poorly organized responses: I just want to point out, in case it's not redundant, that all the colors of the rainbow are composed from three colors: Blue, Yellow, and Red. Blue plus Yellow generates the Greens, Blue plus Red gets the Purples, Yellow plus Red gets the Oranges, etc. Take away on of those three - blue, yellow or red - and you can't get any of the related combination colors. This is why color printers have four cartridges: Cyan (blue), Yellow, Red and Black. This makes it extremely strange that Office has eliminated one of the pillar colors.
And Yellow is, again, the most popular highlight color on the planet, even outside full palette needs. |

If you are indeed referring to Text Highlight Colors, then yellow is one of them.
In Charles' screen shot, you'll see yellow on the top left (of the color palette).

Oh my goodness. It seems to be my display. The block you say is yellow is showing up as a strong Kelly green on my side, just a bit lighter than the darker green next to it.
Is there a way to change the settings on my Chrome Surfacebook so that it produces this correctly? I've made no changes to my laptop, by the way. So if this is happening to me maybe it's happening to others. |

In the meantime, you should know that it will print yellow and will show up on the displays of those to whom you send files as yellow. |

Thanks very much. I'll certainly turn to Chrome on this one.

I have the same issue and solved it by disabling Color Filters.
Start->Settings->Ease of Access->Color Filters. Disable Color Filters. Result: I got my yellow highlight color back in Excel and Word. Not only that, the green tinge in my games, desktop, icons etc disappeared. The color gold looks just like gold, no longer dull greenish yellow. |
