Default Footer on last page or first page if only one

Hi Folks

I have been trawling the threads and trying to figure this out but I am a novice and need to have it all spelled out very plainly.

I have a docx template that I need the footer to appear on the last page of. If the document is only one page long then it needs to be on page one.

I can get it to go on the last page but if there is only one page then it doesn't appear.

How do I make this footer go on last page or first page if only one. Thanks for your help.
