tab order issue
hi,
i am new to this forum and i am also relatively new to ms office word. i have version 2007 on windows xp. i am writing a letter where i use a lot of tabs in order to keep some uniformity with the paragraphs. after compiling the letter which takes me forever, because i am also very slow in typing, i save the document. .....so far so good. i then want to email it to a friend, so i enclose it and send it to him via email. as he opens it, he notices the text is all over the place and the sentences loose the tab unity.. anyone out there with suggestions, of one of the many things i may be doing wrong? |

Your description suggests you're using tabs inappropriately. You also need to learn how to use paragraph Styles, especially, as those lie at the heart of how Word works. See:
https://shaunakelly.com/word/styles/stylesms.html https://www.word-tips.com/microsoft-word-styles/ http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/styles.htm Finally, because Word uses the active printer driver to optimise the page layout, there is always the potential for the layout to change somewhat when the same document is opened on a computer using a different printer driver - which is especially likely to be the case when a different printer and/or operating system version is in use. Ultimately, if you need to control how a document's layout will be presented to anyone who sees it, save it as a PDF and distribute that.

thanks macropod....
one other thing i didn't mention. when my friend compiles his own but similar letter and then emails it to me, it arrives as it should for me to read but in perfect structure. if i then use his letter and add more to a sentence, therefore forcing another line which i have to tab, then the reply letter to him also becomes distorted...... please see document enclosed. the letter has been edited for privacy, but it shows what i am trying to say. "the letter as it should look like" where its correct as it should be on dates: 19th, 23rd and 26th of may and 1st, 27th and 29th june "and now as an email" examples of this distortion is clearly seen on dates: 25th of may and 5th of june |

Your attachment merely contains two images - not the actual document content, so it's impossible to see how they're formatted.

Your attachment confirms that you're using tabs quite inappropriately. You should not be using them to simulate hanging indents or to force line breaks. Use hanging indents and, where, applicable, manual line breaks. You should also use tab-stops appropriate to the content you're formatting.
Try the attached. Note how all the dates are right-aligned, the wrapped content employs manual line breaks and such indents as are required are handled via hanging indents. And all that's before defining a Style with the appropriate attributes.

thanks paul....
good news: your document works for me..... bad news: because i have "two left feet" when it comes to both computers and microsoft word.... im not sure what you mean, as i have no technical knowledge of even what "hanging indents" and " wrapped content" are.... is there a you tube video i can go to, that specifically explains what i am doing wrong? and or is there a specific name to this problem that i can look up myself...? |

I suggest you start with a web search on:
"Microsoft Word" basics and check out some of the hits that returns.
