Default Can't open 1990 doc correctly

Hello:

I have a few 1990 .doc, created with Microsoft Word 1997-2003 (in my case, probably 1997), and no matter what coding I choose, the text is partly mangled. What can I do to make the files open correctly?

I have Word 2010 for PC.

Thanks,

Hans L

For something that old, you may need to use the Word (for DOS) converter for Word. See: http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm

Found no applicable app on that page, so I went to tab Word Pages and found an Add-in for batch-converting Word 97 docs to .docx. Unfortunately, the resulting docx was the same as I got by opening directly with Word 2010.

Now, the files I needed are not all that important, so I will just delete them; I have hard copies that seem to be the same as the rogue files, so I will scan.

Thanks for your help.

Did you extract the CNV file to the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv?

Nope, I did not. I looked at the reg file, nd it looked as if it did it, but it did not. So, I did (I put one copy in TextConv and another in TextConv\en-US, just to be sure :-)(but I see the path is not to en-US.)

Opened with MS Word 2010, but, again, no cigar. Perhaps they are WPD files whose extensions i changed at one point in the distant past to make them easier to open? I'll look and see if there is a WordPerfect converter.

Found no wp converter. Changed one extension to WPD, but, of course, no success. Formatting shows up as, among other characters, .
