Default Word 2013 hyperlinks pointing to wrong location

Hello, all! Thanks in advance for the help.

My document has hundreds of hyperlinks that point to level 3 headings within the same doc. (I'm linking terms to their definitions.) I created the links by right clicking the term>hyperlink>Place in This Document>then selecting the appropriate heading.

Some links route to the wrong definition. When I open the hyperlink for editing, "Place in this Document" is no longer displayed, and instead, "Existing File or Web Page" is selected, and in the "Address" bar, it says "#_Incorrect_heading"

Editing the link to point back to the correct heading does not work- it reverts back to what I described above. Removing the hyperlink and re-building it from scratch nets the same result. (I have also tried removing and redoing all instances of a problematic term, and I still get the same problem.)

Even more confusing is in several instances, although the "Address" in the Edit hyperlink box is "#_Incorrect_heading" some of those hyperlinks do actually route to the correct definition! For example:

Text to display: "Example 1"
Address in hyperlink address: "#_Example_3"
Link routes to definition for: Example 1 (not Example 3)

The trouble seems to stem from me having made changes to my definition section. The problems are confined to definitions that have been moved or changed (or are adjacent to ones that have moved or changed). It's almost as if Word is remembering old headings and locations, even though all tracked changes have been accepted, or changes were made without tracked changes on.

I'd sure appreciate any insight into what's causing this. It's a bit hard to describe, so please let me know if I need to provide more (or better) info. Thank you!

The basic problem is that, when you created the hyperlinks, they referenced a hidden Word bookmark related to the headings concerned. When you moved those headings with Track Changes on, the hidden bookmarks didn't go with them. Accepting the changes resulted in the bookmarks' deletion. Is there a reason you didn't use cross-references?

Thank you! That helps me understand why the problem happened in the first place, but I still don't understand why I can't create new links to the correct heading? Why would it revert to an old, hidden, deleted bookmark when I'm giving it a new location to reference? Is there any way to access the hidden bookmarks and update/correct them? (I apologize if that's a stupid question- I know nothing about bookmarks.)

I used hyperlinks because I needed the display text to be different from the actual heading. Many of the definitions are acronyms and have all the words listed, but I just wanted the acronym in the body text. I do use cross references for anything where the exact text of a referenced item makes sense in my sentence.

Thanks again!

Have you accepted all the tracked changes? Do your new headings have the Heading 3 Style applied? If so, hyperlink to the new headings via Insert|Hyperlink>Place in this document.

Once you correct the path for one such hyperlink, you should be able to use Find/Replace to correct all other hyperlinks referencing the same location. To do that without first deleting the faulty old hyperlink you're replacing, press Alt-F9 to expose the field codes in the document. Use the faulty old hyperlink's destination for the Find text and the new one for the Replace text. Press Alt-F9 again, then Ctrl-A, F9 when you're done, then delete what is now the duplicate hyperlink.
